child custody

Must we address custody during the divorce process?

Every divorce of two married persons who have one or more minor children in common will involve a child custody issue that must be resolved.

What is involved in resolving child custody?

The parties may have an agreement (a “stipulation' is the common legal terminology) or benefit from representation as they move through mediation, appointment of a guardian ad litem, and a custody study.

What happens if we cannot come to an agreement for child custody?

If an agreement is not reached, Attorney Alan Hoff, Attorney Elizabeth Ryan-Panzer or Attorney Heather Jansen are prepared to zealously advocate for their client’s position at trial.

What if the parents are not married?

Child custody and physical placement issues are as important to unmarried parents as they are to divorcing couples.

What if paternity must be proven?

The attorneys at Hoff & Panzer represent parents in paternity actions as well.

Are Hoff & Panzer Attorneys experienced with
Child Custody, Guardianship, & Grandparents' Visitation?

The attorneys at Hoff & Panzer have represented people in every type of custody and support matter, including sole legal custody, equally shared physical placement, primary physical placement (sometimes referred to as physical custody), visitation only within the discretion of one parent, and visitation only with supervision. They have also represented clients in guardianship proceedings and cases where a third party, such as a grandparent (or grandparents), is seeking visitation rights.

What about child support?

The Court requires that a child be supported by both his or her parents.  Child support orders are separate from custody and placement matters, but the two are interconnected as the amount of child support that is paid depends on both parents' incomes and the amount of time the minor child or children spend in each parent’s household.
